Pond Heater

Should I put a pond heater in for my Koi fish? I live in Pennsylvania and it gets pretty cold during the winter. (10-30 degrees) - Sam

You should put a heater (also known as a de-icer) in your pond.  Your main goal is to keep a hole in the ice for gas exchange (fresh oxygen in, carbon dioxide out).  You can also put in an air stone and an air diffuser to help aerate the water.  The pond should be at least three feet deep, otherwise you should keep your Koi indoors in a winter tank.
