Why are the Fry Ugly

I have both koi and goldfish in a 2,500 gal. pond. They were very active during breeding season. The babies are about 8 weeks old now, but 75 of them look just like minnows. Dark gray/brown on top with a dark stripe down the middle and a white belly (just like a minnow). The other 50 babies are pale orange. Why do they look just like minnows? - Gingrich

The majority of fry revert back to the natural color of their ancestors, which is why the Japanese breeders cull the majority of their fish. The carp that Koi came from are a dark black color.
