Pump Too Large

Can I use a large pool pump that would be used with a home made filtration system using drums with different media for a koi pond. I also have a 3/4 hp pump and my neighbor is saying it is too powerful to use on a koi pond. Is this true? - Florence

You only want to circulate the water in your pond through the filter system about once ever hour or two. If you do it more than that, it creates too much current of the fish and the water will flow over your media too fast for the bacteria to filter it. Check out the pumps flow rate to see how much water it circulates an hour.

Example,

A 2,000 gallon pond can handle any pump that puts out 1,000 to 2,000 gallons per hour. Remember, the filtration and waterfalls will slow down the flow rate due to head pressure, so a larger pump may work. Consult the pump manufacturer for a definite answer.
