Do they have any predators?

There are many animals that will target Koi for a meal, these are the most common:
  • Mink
  • Blue Herons
  • Raccoons
  • Osprey
  • Eagles
  • Cormorants
  • Green Herons
If a Koi is released into a natural pond, anything that will target a docile fish will go after a Koi!

Here are a few ways to deter predators:
  • Build a pond with steep walls (usually requiring poured concrete). Steep walls won't completely stop predators from coming to your pond, but it will keep them from going in it (except for mink, they swim).
  • String up high-tensile fishing wire around your pond, until the predators go away. Animals will have a hard time seeing the fishing line, so they will get deterred from going into your pond.
  • Put up fencing, regular or electrical around the pond. Electrical fencing works great against mink.
  • Get a scarecrow, they have a motion sensor that, when activated, will shoot a stream of water and will scare animals away.
